The Spirit working

On Tuesday August 6th all classes competing for the Britannia Cup yachting race were abandoned. The Cup is part of Cowes Week. The reason for the abandonment was that there was a lack of wind. No wind means no capacity for the boats to sail. Thereby, all competition is rendered impossible.

This led me to wonder how many of our worship services should be abandoned? It is the wind of the Spirit which make our services valuable to our God. In Philippians 3:3 we read that a part of true christian experience is to know “worship by the Spirit of God.” Let us challenge ourselves here and ask ourselves about the services in our churches. Are we truly knowing the blowing of the Spirit of God to bring forth worship to our God?

Or is it the case that the Lord wants our services to be abandoned because there is a lack of the  Spirit? This was His conclusion in Malachi’s day. He says ‘Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will accept no offering from your hands (Mal.: 1:10).

And finally let us remember the words of our Lord Jesus: If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!’ (Luke 11:13).
