Amaziah was something of a mixture. In 2 Chronicles 25:2 we read that He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly. In 2 Chronicles 25:14 we read of something of this mixture when the Lord says When Amaziah returned from slaughtering the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the people of Seir. He set them up as his own gods, bowed down to them and burned sacrifices to them. Success in defeating the Lord’s enemies, but compromise in following the false gods. The Lord was not happy. What I want to draw attention to particularly here is how the Lord responded.
The Lord’s response was to send a prophet who says to Amaziah ‘Why do you consult this people’s gods, which could not save their own people from your hand?’ (v15b). The Lord could have spoken directly, but he arranges for a prophet to take the message from Himself. This is ever the Lord’s way. He is the God who sends messengers to bring His message. It is ever so rare to have a direct verbal message from heaven. The baptism and transfiguration of the Lord stood out because of their rarity.
We need to heed this. Today as always we need messengers from the Lord to bring His message to people. Let us pray for the raising up of these preachers and teachers today that we might hear the voice of the Lord through them.
