I have been reading this book. It is about a couple coping with having two special needs children. It is a great read. So much helpful stuff in it. Here is a quote from p85.
If you think what you have is greater than what you think you deserve, then that’s where thankfulness comes from. If you think what you deserve is greater than what you have, then that’s where bitterness comes from.
This is the opening statement in a great chapter on thankfulness. I recommend stopping and pondering upon this statement and applying it to ourselves. Fundamentally it reminds us that every Christian should be relentlessly thankful. We deserve eternal hell and the rejection of God forever, and yet, through God’s grace, we have so much. When this appreciation permeates our beings there should be a relentless surge of thankfulness.
Oh LORD make me to be more thankful to you as the giver of all that is good.
