Attending Conferences

When I attend a conference with someone else I generally agree with that person or persons that we will split up during the conference.  Why is this a reasonable thing to do?

  1. One of the benefits of a conference is to confer with others. To be always sitting with the person you went with inherently hinders this.
  2. On the way home from the conference you can speak with your friend / colleague and consider what you have learnt.

It always seems a little bit counter productive when people who go to a conference spend the whole of the conference together as a group.  It seems to take away something of the conference experience.
