One of the great perversions of our age is that the lie of evolution is accepted as truth. So if you listen to news items, read newspapers, look at encyclopedias you will be aware that the doctrine of evolution is never questioned. But why is it that we as Christians reject evolution as the true understanding of origins?
Let us be clear that when we are speaking of evolution we are referring which is more correctly called “macro-evolution”. This is the belief that the species that exist today have evolved from other species. This is exemplified in the commonly held view that man has descended from monkeys. It is this view which we reject. We reject this theory because when God created as recorded in Gen. 1 He created everything according to its kind. This phrase is continually used in Gen. 1 and refers to life in all its forms whether it be animals, plants, fish and birds
Contrariwise we accept as being true that there is micro-evolution. This is change within species. Over time animals, insects and birds do adapt to changing environments. However, this is a completely different thing to there being change across species.
So much confusion has come though because people have confused these two types of evolution. Accordingly, change within species has been assumed to apply across species and thus truth has been taken too far and we end up with the lie of evolutionary thought.
In reaching these conclusions men have not been solely dependent on science rather they have been motivated by “religious” principles. Men have used evolution to convince themselves that there is no creator God. Rather they assert that man has evolved over millions of years to become what he is today. The start came with either a “big bang” or an amorphous splodge. From there evolution kicked in. But we must be aware that it is ultimately not science that is driving this theorizing, but rather a commitment to extinguish God from their thinking. It is interesting to note that Lenin, the architect of the first atheistic communist state, who sought to “remove the myth of God from the thoughts of man” had his “Darwin” statue which he kept on his desk.
This comes about because man having removed the concept of a creator then swiftly concludes that there is no God to which he has to answer. They think they are on their own and only answerable to themselves. This should not surprise us because ever since Adam rebelled in the garden of Eden man has wanted to live in independence of God. We will not have this man to reign over us’ are words which echo down the ages.
Our Behaviour. At the very basic level we can say that if you teach people that they came from animals then we should not be surprised if they act like animals. Evolutionary teaching removes the whole concept of ultimate accountability. So like the rich man in Luke 12:19 men say to themselves Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry. This man was warned by God `Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ (v20).
Removing the unwanted. Two key evolutionary concepts are those of “natural selection” and “survival of the fittest”. If evolution is true to its own logic then it must apply these to society. In doing this the implications become horrific. The Nazi gas chambers for the Jews and other undesirables are the result. Abortion and Euthanasia also are nurtured by this doctrine as people/society get rid of their unwanted babies and older people.
Instructing others. By implication, as well, if only the best are being selected and only the fittest are surviving the the conclusion is that man must be getting better. Sub-consciously then men conclude that the little cherubs born into our families only need a little prompting in the right direction and they will turn out alright. Accordingly great harm is caused when men reject the truth that Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him. (Prov. 22:15). All are still under sin and we ignore this at our peril. In fact the vile behavior in our communities testifies to this.
The Gospel is undermined. Further, if Man is getting better then the whole matter of the sinfulness of man is at best diluted and at worse lost. And of course if man is not sinful then he has no need of a Saviour and there is no gospel to preach. The true testimony is, as Paul says in Gal. 3:22, the Scripture has confined all under sin. Man is not improving; he is still at rock bottom and in desperate need of a Saviour. All need to hear the gospel.
The Cross is nullified. If evolution is true all man needs is an aid to encourage his improvement. Hence the cross of our LORD Jesus is rendered meaningless. However, when we realize the truth of our destitute condition we are led to glory in his cross (see Gal. 6:14) and in the Son of God who loved Me and gave Himself for me (Gal. 2:20). To the saved sinner the cross means everything.
We must, therefore, stand firm against the tide of evolutionary thinking because it stands as truth that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (Gen.:1:1). And giving way leads to the loss of true Christianity. The implications are as stark as that.
