As Christian leaders, our call is to shepherd sheep and not maintain an institution. Caring for sheep means that we are interested in the people in our care and long for the best for them. If we are maintaining an institution our main goal is to keep everything in operation and as many people on board as possible.
Peter said to the leaders among the dispersed Christians to be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care (1 Pet. 5:2a). One of the ways that we see the true mettle of church leaders is when people are wanting to leave the church. An institution builder treats such people as inconveniences who, because they are no longer part of the project, need to be ushered on their way as soon as possible so that as little damage is caused as possible. Whereas a shepherd wants to help that person to achieve their fullest development for the Lord. Accordingly, he will labour, as much as lies within him, to find a spiritual home which will be beneficial to the sheep who is seeking to move on..
