Christians should love gay and lesbian people. However all Christians should hate homosexual activity. Furthermore, any person converted to Christ from a homosexual lifestyle should be finished with that way of life. So to have a Gay Christian Movement is a complete contradiction in terms.
These statements set the whole homosexual issue before us in a very stark manner. Are we justified in making these assertions? Let us look to the scriptures to establish a proper attitude to these matters which have a high profile in society today.
CONVERSION FROM A HOMOSEXUAL LIFESTYLE
The church in Corinth was made up of many who had been converted from sordid backgrounds. Some, it appears, had been gays and lesbians. Paul uses these words in writing to them. Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Cor. 6:9-11). However, their homosexual lifestyle was now in the past. They had been become Christians and were now finished with these immoral lifestyles.
THE SIN OF HOMOSEXUAL ACTS
Why should they have left their homosexual ways behind though? The answer: because God considers such ways to be an offense to him. Leviticus 18:22 still sounds forth down the ages as He speaks of males and says: You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. That which God has declared to be an abomination should have no place in the Christian’s life.
>Nevertheless, we must be aware that as Christians we all have our weak areas wherein we are particularly drawn towards sin. For some, particularly those converted from a gay background there are real battles to be waged against the tendency to wander into these immoral ways. Therefore, as Christians we should be very sensitive towards one another so that we give no occasion to stumble our brother or our sister. Certain ways of dressing and certain ways of acting may put temptation in the ways of others and we should be careful about such.
WHAT IS MEANT BY SIN
Perhaps at this stage we might face up to the issue about when homosexual sin is actually committed. Is it just in engaging such wicked sexual acts or is found in the attitude itself. Matthew 5:27-28 gives us some help“You have heard that it was said to those of old, `You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” For a man to admire the looks of another man is not sin. However, to lust after that man is sin. A similar statement could be said about women.
One danger we are in as Christians is that of categorizing homosexual acts as the sin of sins. Top of any list of abominable acts. However, such does not seem to be scripturally justifiable. All sin is rebellion against God and we should flee all such ways.
THE JUDGMENT OF GOD
Nevertheless, there is a sense that homosexual sin does appear to be particularly characteristic of societies which lie under the judgment of God. Sodom and Gomorrah are ever set forward as sad models of places where derelict anti-God cultures were found. In Genesis 19:4-5 we see how the men of these cities were lusting after Lot’s visitors. Also in Romans 1 we see when men give up on God, God gives up on them and one sign of this is even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. (26b-27).
WITNESSES/EVANGELISTS AMONG GAYS/LESBIANS
Let us finally though return to the Corinthians and remember that when they were living as gays or lesbians they had heard the gospel and received it. This reminds us that we must not right off homosexuals as beyond the reach of God’s love. Definitely not! We should reach out to them with the love of God. The homosexual lifestyle is dysfunctional and any living therein can have no peace with God. We should show the love of God to them. Homosexuals should know that we love them even though we hate their way of life. Paul in Romans 10:14 says: How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? Perhaps God has introduced someone into your life either at college or work or wherever who needs to hear the message of the gospel through your life and your mouth. Be careful not to run away from such a God-given opportunity.
