Spiritual psychology

Paul had a lot of hard things to say to the Corinthians. He had to address, immorality, wildness and selfishness in the use of gifts and  court cases amongst believers for example. But he starts his first letter to them by encouraging them. In 1 Corinthians 1:4-9 he tells them of how they have been enriched by God and how the Lord has so richly gifted them.

Paul is adopting a wise spiritual procedure. He is using encouragement before rebuke. Let us seize every opportunity to encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ so that they know that we love them. They will then know that if we come to rebuke them this is not just because we have a “downer” on them. They know that we love them.

And whenever we have to speak to someone always be thoughtful about drawing alongside them with encouragement before speaking the rebuke.

Let us follow Paul’s’ spiritual psychology.
